Road Safety Audit
Road Safety Audits are required on all new changes to the highway network, which may affect how drivers, riders and pedestrians use the section of road in question. Audits are carried out by small teams of qualified auditors who must be independent of the scheme designer(s). The auditors will view the scheme from the perspective of all road users, including drivers of motorised vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, people with a sight and/or mobility impairment, equestrians, and public transport users. They will also consider how the scheme will perform during hours of darkness, and in times of inclement weather such as heavy rain or freezing conditions.
Audits are carried out on schemes large and small, from an access to a small group of new properties, up to high-speed multi-lane bypasses. There are 4 stages of audit:
Stage 1 - feasibility or preliminary stage
Stage 2 - detail design stage
Stage 3 - pre-opening or when the works are substantially complete
Stage 4 - a review of the scheme normally 12 months after opening to traffic
Road Safety Audits are governed by, and detailed within, GG119 of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, which you can view here
All ATSS Auditors are qualified to GG119 requirements, and several of the team hold the Highways England RSA Certificate of Competence, allowing us to work on the Trunk Road Network. If you would like a free quotation for audits at any stage, please contact us with brief details of the relevant scheme.
